Pictures in the snow are super magical and awesome but only when you are prepared. Since I grew up in the deserts of California aka on Tatooine.... Yep that Tatooine....Anyways that for another blog post..... I never realized how cold being around snow was! It's freezing! Especially when you aren't use to it.
So when taking pictures in a Winter Wonderland here are some things to remember :
LAYERS-
Big snow jackets and pants aren't exactly flattering in photos even though they are amazingly warm. (if we are winter sport pictures, that would be the exception) So you have to be more creative in figuring out outfits. For girls you can add tights, scarves, hats, a cute coat or vest, etc. For boys- beanies, coats, scarves, etc.
INCORPORATE HIDDEN LAYERS… AND Hot hands! Think thermals and those pads you can hold on to or stick in your shoes.
TEXTURES
Textures are so fun to incorporate into your picture outfits. What first comes to mind for winter textures are wool, herringbone patterns, and thermal. Textures create more depth into your images than you would typically get with smooth cotton materials.
PROPS
Im not saying huge props but you more like blankets, hot cocoa, a fire, even a crazy cabin or hot spring. Oh,..... Shoot idea! Hot springs in the snow! Who wants to do that? Shoot me a message. Just keep thinking in the back of your mind what will help combat the cold.
FOOTWARE
Boots and higher top shoes are not only going to look better in the snow but your feet will feel better in the snow as well. Lower tops are more likely to get snow coming into the top leaving you with soaking cold socks and feet. Burrrrrr.......Also consider shoes with good tread. Snowy locations translates to ice as well which means it can be slippery.
INCENTIVE
aka Bribery. Have something to look forward to after the shoot that you can bring up. For example " Oh I am so cold aren't you? After we do pictures let's go get some hot chocolate!" More often than not, those faces light up pretty fast when there is a treat involved.
HAVE FUN
Always, ALWAYS remember to make it a fun experience. I don't want you to feel like pictures are a chore or a have to. Its a time to be with your loved ones and capture that time together so be HAPPY!
